How Do Home Circuit Breakers Work

Home circuit breakers are designed to detect an excessive current in a circuit and "trip" to open the circuit when it senses a dangerous overload. The heart of a circuit breaker is a pair of metallic strips that form a switch. These strips are connected to a spring-loaded mechanism, which can be triggered when an excessive current is detected. When this happens, the spring extends and the switch trips, opening the circuit and stopping the excessive current from flowing.

The current in a circuit is measured in amperes. Currents above a certain level can cause serious damage to cables, appliances and other equipment, as well as create fire hazards. That's why all home circuits are equipped with circuit breakers, which are designed to trip when the current reaches unsafe levels.

Different types of circuit breakers are designed to handle different current loads. The most common type of breaker is the 15-amp breaker, which is designed for general use in residential settings. The rating will be printed on the body of the breaker and it should be noted that a breaker that is rated for less than 15 amps should never be used on a circuit with a higher current rating.

When an excessive current is sensed, the circuit breaker operates in two stages. In the first stage, the trip mechanism is activated, creating an electrical short circuit across the terminals. This short circuit absorbs some of the excess energy and stabilizes the current, preventing it from exceeding the rated level. In the second stage, the contacts of the breaker open completely, breaking the circuit and preventing any further current flow.

Circuit breakers are designed to be reset after they trip. Simply flipping the switch back to the “on” position will restore power to the circuit. However, it's important to remember that circuit breakers are designed to protect your home and its occupants from potential electrical hazards - if the breaker trips more than once in a short period of time, it could indicate a problem with the wiring or with one of the appliances on the circuit. In such cases, it's best to call in a qualified electrician to inspect the circuit before resetting the breaker.
