Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) are an important safety device for workers in any setting, providing maximum protection from electric shock. GFCIs protect workers by quickly detecting and interrupting a circuit when it has a ground fault or a short circuit. For this reason, GFCIs are mandated by the National Electric Code for use in areas that have any potential for exposure to water and electricity, including bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoors.

When a current passes through a circuit, a portion of it should flow back to the source of the power. In a ground fault, however, some of the current flows through a different path — one with human contact. This can result in electric shock. A GFCI senses the difference between the normal current and the current caused by a ground fault and will shut off the power instantly, preventing injury.

GFCIs are designed to be highly sensitive and able to detect differences in current as small as 5 mA. This means they can sense even tiny faults and act before the person can suffer serious injury. The GFCI can also tell the difference between a ground fault and other anomalies, such as high resistance or insulation breakdown.

A GFCI automatically tests itself every so often to make sure it is working properly. If the GFCI isn’t functioning correctly, it will either trip or sound an alarm, warning workers of the potential danger. It’s up to the workers to inspect the GFCI and replace it if necessary.

GFCIs are a critical part of any electrical system – especially when it comes to keeping workers safe. Installing and regularly testing GFCIs is essential for ensuring a safe workplace. Fortunately, GFCIs are now required by law in many places, making it easier for employers to ensure their workers’ safety.
